If the leader possesses these leadership qualities and traits, you can expect that the staff will be encouraged to follow his or her lead. It is also extremely significant that as a leader, you show them that you possess these traits and not merely keep in within yourself. Some people do not easily get your point if you do not show them directly they cannot understand you. The staff is not there to read your mind, but they can read your reactions and the way how you treat them, in that case it is better for you to show them that you possess these traits.

#1 – Honesty

The first one is Honesty. Honesty is the absence of cheating, lying and theft. It is considered the straightforwardness or fairness of a conduct. In most cases, people always follow a leader that is honest. People look up to a leader that is true to their act and deed. The common problem among leaders of today is their inability to accept failures to the extent that if the strategy did not work, they are afraid to admit that they failed. Failure in that case, should not be a hindrance, but a challenge on the part of the leader to strive further.

#2 – Vision and Inspiration

The second trait that all leaders must possess is Vision and Inspiration. People always look up to somebody as their role-model or source of inspiration regardless in work or in personal life. A leader that is so inspiring is followed by many staff and employees. A person is said to be inspiring if they are able to tell people how the company is going to alter everything and make things happen. To be an inspiring person means being able to show to your staff or employee the common goal, and telling them how all of you can achieve such goal. It also includes telling them how each of them can be a part of the vision, and for sure you will inspire them to work wholeheartedly. To be an inspiring leader is not that easy, do not worry, it can be learned. Think of a person or an individual who inspires you and start from there, you can see how they communicate or how they deal with other people.

#3 – Intelligence and Knowledge

Another trait is Intelligence. Intelligence is the capacity to understand, learn, and understand facts, relationships, values and others. Since life is a continues learning process, intelligence also never cease to acquire higher level. The long years that we have spent in school are just basic grounds to prepare us to the real world or to the real challenge. In order to sharpen knowledge or intelligence, one must continue to learn several things in life. Many people will judge a person’s intelligence with the way they speak, their behavior and their attitude. As a leader, we can show our intelligence by gently leading our staff to understand the things that we want them to learn. Being intelligent is not only being seen in paper works but also on how you deal with your coworkers or your subordinates.

#4 – Focus

The fourth trait is the anticipation of the leader towards the goal. Leadership is like being in front of the battalion ready for battle; you have the common goal that is to defeat the opponent. In reality, leadership can be associated to the commander of the battalion who faces the enemy first. The leader must actively communicate with his people so that they fully understand the goal and they have 100% dedication to achieving the goal. The leader must not be afraid to have a forward looking vision, meaning they should also be thinking of the future and not only the condition at the present time. The leader must set a goal for everyone to follow and this can be achieved by planning, conceptualizing strategies and thinking about the future. Together with these strategies, the leader must also be able to keep his word for example, if he promised something from the group that once they meet a goal, they will be given rewards. This promise serves also as an inspiration for people to work harder towards the common vision.

#5 – Leading Competence

The last trait is the competence of the leader. Competence is the quality of being well qualified. Competence does not necessarily mean possessing an extremely high level of intelligence in all areas of work in the organization or a company. Competency is showing the staff that things that you know and the things that you can do further, thus giving them the impression that you are competent to be the boss. All the traits that were mentioned above are not enough to be a basis that the leader is highly qualified. He must also demonstrate competency to his staff. Therefore, a leader must observe all five traits or qualities in order for them to be called an outstanding leader and in order for their staff to follow their leads.
