How can I enhance my extracurricular experience to get a teaching job?

Executive Leadership Coaching

I am working towards becoming a social studies teacher, but through my college preparation and student teaching I foolishly did not pay much attention on gaining training and experience in an extracurricular activity to make myself more marketable. Now I am graduated, and looking for advice on how to gain that experience to aid in my job search. How can I get myself in a position to be an advisor for school newspaper, yearbook, debate, leadership, and coaching soccer. Those are the things that fit my interest, but I have no experience in any of them. Where can I start?

Were you ever on debate team, soccer team, etc? If you play or do those add them to resume as other experience. You could check with soccer teams and see if they need a volunteer assistant. What high school or college clubs were you in? If you get reading certification you would have better chance to be hired. What do you do well? Volunteer at the school where you would like to work – as an assistant in one of those areas. Sign up for substitute work. It is an “in”. If they can’t find a teacher, if you can teach it they can hire you with temporary certification and you have the year to take classes to qualify. Next year could get regular certification a d be hired for the job. May be long term sub in maternity leave where teacher plans to return.

Good luck.
