Executive Leadership Coaching

Business executives face similar tough challenges as they sort out how to inspire distrustful employees. People are skeptical for lots of reasons. The first step is sorting out what is going on.

Here are three challenges for business executives understand. Begin to understand and you will find ways to inspire distrustful and skeptical employees.

Notwithstanding individual wins and losses, leaders might find it useful to sort out what’s going on by understanding three elements. First, 2008 was the year trust evaporated. Second, four generations working in the workforce together, each one with its own distinct and unique personality, and what we think is the cause and effect…The third area to ponder is epidemic levels of employee disengagement which might be the run up and result of years of misguided business leadership which primarily focused on the financials.

2008 is the year trust evaporated. U.S citizens watched their 401k drop 50% in value. Excesses in Wall Street unnerved even the most loyal observers. The government bailed out the largest businesses and those not too big to fail. Faith in government leaders collapsed. Congressional approval ratings averaged 25%…with a staggering 65% disapproval. Trust evaporated.

2008 is a watershed year. While trust is earned over time…it can be lost in moments. That is the case leaders and mangers face today. Leaders face the distrust of employees, customers, owners, regulators and in a general sense all citizens who felt duped by the arrogance and greed exposed in 2008.

Lancaster and Stillman research describes the inherent conflicts among generations in the workplace. Each generation has its own set of values, beliefs, experiences and…thus personality. The generational differences present an opportunity to understand and leverage or to pit one against the other and exacerbate judging, discontent and distrust. Executives, managers and leaders of all kinds of organizations can benefit by understanding the clash among generations.

The most pressing fact facing business is the near epidemic dissatisfaction among existing employees. Epic numbers of employees are free agents. Right Management, the talent and career management expert within Manpower surveyed more than 900 workers in North America and asked: Do you plan to pursue new job opportunities as the economy improves in 2010?

60% – Yes, I intend to leave

21% – Maybe, so I’m networking

6% – Not likely, but I’ve updated my resume

13% – No, I intend to stay

Nearly 87% of the workers are at some state of free agency.

The challenge to inspire employees begins at its very core based on trust and understanding. The wise executive will develop strategies to re establish trust among all of its stakeholders. From employees, customers, owners, and good citizenship. Inspiring employees begins with consistent, clear, acts of trust. Leaders must become coaches rather than administrators…coaches understand the strengths, skills, needs of their players, thus a huge payoff awaits the leader who embraces the diversity of the generations in the workforce. This article is intended to be a first step to help leaders begin to understand how to inspire employees.a
