On retiring from the sport, an athlete can establish new goals, set a new career, but you can still lose a significant key. This key can be the difference between a successful transition or a loss of purpose and drive.Â'm talking about the loss of importance, an important human need as discussed here.
All human beings have certain basic needs. According to Abraham Maslow (1943 paper A Theory of Human Motivation) there is a hierarchy of needs, in order of importance, as follows:
Physiological 1.a (breathing, food, water, sex, sleep, homeostasis, excretion)
2.A security (security of body, employment, resources, morality, family, health, property)
3rd Love / belonging (friendship, family, sexual intimacy),
4th-esteem (self esteem, confidence, achievement, respect and other
5.a self-realization (morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem solving, lack of prejudice, acceptance of facts)
In this hierarchy, as long as a need for lower level is met, the man will try to match the next and the next level. Levels 2 to 5 are psychological needs are met and if not can cause anxiety and anguish.
Anthony Robbins teaches six human needs – 4 basic needs that the certainty, uncertainty, importance and Love / Connection more 2 which is needed for spiritual growth and contribution.
Both debates over human needs indicate a need for meaning, significance and self-esteem. Everyone has their own way of meeting this need and can be positively or negatively. can be done through achievement or perhaps through of reputation, for example, a person can be a bully to feel significant.Â
The satisfaction of this need for recognition is what may be lost when retires. athlete I remember talking to a gymnast for many years who retired after Sydney 2000. He lamented the lack of reward and "no longer feels important ".
Along with the loss of importance, athletes can also lose the connection to the sports family and there is often a waste security, Â They might be thinking "now what?" Â All these factors may play a role in the confusion of an athlete feels at the end of his career.
This may explain why some athletes are in trouble and on the wrong side of the law since sport.es Some athletes are in the media for the wrong reasons, engaging in fights or desperate publicity stunts.
Recognizing that this loss of importance is an important factor to consider in retirement can help the athlete prepare for new ways to meet the need. may not be the same level, such as being in the spotlight of the media, but can be replaced by something even more satisfying including the creation of a meaningful relationship with a new fulfilling career and in particular making a difference to the lives of others.Â
Awareness is the important factor here and is being prepared include the establishment of new aims to give a constant sense of progress and build confidence.
