Online Leadership Training

Lean Six Sigma Training is comprised of many different methodologies for improving quality in process and products for a variety of organizations. In healthcare, the principles of the DMAIC Six Sigma Methodology can be used in many ways. To demonstrate the use of this principle, the example will be noise reduction in hospitals. After all, hospitals are much more efficient and productive when the environment is quiet and professional. To start, the problem needs to be defined. In this case, noise is the problem that needs to be improved so that customers (patients) are more satisfied with their process of being in and staying in the hospital.

Once the problem is defined, it needs to be measured, which is the second step of the DMAIC Six Sigma Methodology. Measuring the noise will take a team of people to determine the different areas that the noise is coming from. With so many different areas in and around hospitals that can be responsible for noise, this will need to be broken down into sections. For example, set up a chart of which areas have the most noise problems so that those can be addressed primarily and even the location of the hospital in relevance to exterior noises that cannot be controlled. In this respect, uncontrollable noises would become accepted risks. All others can be placed on the charts for improvement.

Analyzing the noise is the next step of this Lean Six Sigma Methodology. The analysis of the noise includes charting where it comes from, how bothersome it is to patients, and determining how it can best be corrected. Along with the areas that are analyzed, times of day should also be taken into account. For example, measuring the noise in one area during peak hours and then again during off-peak hours will provide insight as to the cause of the noise and how best to correct the situation.

Lean Six Sigma Methodology points to Improvement as the next step in this process. There are many different ways that the noise reduction can occur in different areas of the hospital. Take the time to plan a strategy that works effectively for the facility, even if it includes a variety of different noise reduction concepts and solutions. The more creative you are, the better chance you have for succeeding at noise reduction. Finally, control the noise using the methods you have implemented for noise reduction, and you will see more satisfied patients and more relaxed and happy employees.
